Who We Are
Our team designs solutions that meet biological and engineering requirements for long-term stability, both of the natural environment and, where needed, of adjacent infrastructure. Our services include analysis from concept to final design, and then implementation through construction supervision and monitoring. We use the historical ecology of a project area to identify natural templates to be used as the basis of our designs, ensuring high habitat value around the designed infrastructure.

Mike Hrachovec

Mike (Rocky) Hrachovec

PE, Principal Engineer

Taking projects from initial concept to bid-ready plans and specifications, Rocky has overseen the development of over 51 natural resource projects, with individual constructed values up to $1.2 million. He specializes in the design and construction supervision of upland grading and in-water restoration projects. Rocky has more than 19 years of professional experience in evaluation, design, and construction management of projects requiring hydraulics, stormwater management, and erosion control. His work experience includes design and oversight of projects for stream relocation, bank stabilization, bioengineering, stream enhancements, natural stormwater facilities, and wetland creation. Rocky developed and currently provides field training on selecting and installing erosion control BMPs to over 3,000 city, county and state employees throughout Washington State. Rocky is also one of the founding/principle instructors of the new Stream Restoration Certification Program at the University of Washington.

Alan W. Johnson

Alan W. JohnsonBACK TO TOP

Principal Scientist

A biologist by training, Alan has analyzed and created fish habitats in many streams and waterways of the Northwest. In the last two decades of his career, he has focused on designs and construction approaches to maximize instream habitat for salmon and trout in both inland and tidally influenced waterways. Alan has over 30 years of professional experience in stream habitat analysis and management. His work experience includes design of projects for stream enhancement, bank stabilization and fish passage, construction supervision, permit review and issuance and resource inventories / evaluations for governmental agencies and private sector interests. Alan has developed courses and training sessions on stream ecology, fish passage, and designing and implementing habitat modifications for salmon and trout.

Joe Amann

Joe AmannBACK TO TOP

PE, Engineer

Joe has 13 years of professional experience in hydraulic and hydrologic modeling, stream restoration, geomorphic assessment, sediment and erosion assessment, stormwater management, water quality sampling, roadway design, sanitary and storm sewer design, water main design, and project management. Joe also performs construction inspection, project site monitoring, and data collection. His project experience includes large-scale hydraulic modeling and floodplain mapping of river systems, site-scale development of stormwater management facilities, sub basin-scale stream restoration design, and implementation of water-quality sampling plans.

Bob Keller

Bob KellerBACK TO TOP

Restoration Ecologist

Bob specializes in northwest forested upland and riparian lowland site restoration for which he has developed protocols and detailed methodologies for planting and monitoring. Bob is experienced in obtaining permit approvals in the application of JARPA’s, SEPA, Critical Areas Ordinance exemptions, and land-use permits for both public and private clients. Bob also brings a strong background in volunteer coordination. He has guided more than 3,000 volunteers in single- and multiple-day events and managed over 43 crews in year-long programs. For four years, he developed, implemented, and managed a year-long program designed to train young adults entering the restoration field.

Marcia Fischer

Marcia FischerBACK TO TOP

Restoration Ecologist

An expert in Pacific Northwest vegetation, Marcia’s work focuses on the analysis and restoration designs of freshwater and saltwater ecosystems, riparian vegetation communities and open space projects. As a restoration ecologist, landscape designer and project manager, Marcia has produced restoration and enhancement plans, parks master plans and vegetation management plans that include construction details, notes, and cost estimates. Her construction experience includes developing construction details, cost estimates and construction oversight for site preparation, invasive removal, and plant installation. She has conducted long-term monitoring and oversight of ongoing maintenance of restoration sites.

Kelvin Andrews

Kelvin AndrewsBACK TO TOP

Engineering Technician

Kelvin has over 20 years of experience in project management and communication design that included web, graphic, and database design. Skilled in CAD, technical writing, graphic illustration, and data analysis; he creates and coordinates design plan sets and manages engineering report development. He applies this diverse background in the coordination of stream restoration projects and in client communication. Kelvin just completed a 3-part series on Stream Restoration at the University of Washington.

Charissa Young

Charissa YoungBACK TO TOP

Ecological Engineer

As Primary CADD Technician, Charissa applies her CADD expertise to developing engineering plans and supporting the design process. She coordinates with clients and partner consultants to ensure CADD plans meet client needs and standards. She develops CADD drawings that clearly communicate designs to aid an efficient permitting and bidding process. Additionally, Charissa has a Master of Science in Ecological Engineering from The Ohio State University and a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Science.  Her Master’s work focused on urban riparian/ wetland habitats and stormwater management issues. Charissa’s Master’s studies included natural stormwater mitigation design, hydrologic analysis, water quality analysis, and stream restoration. She has additional experience monitoring wetlands, including completing vegetation surveys, soils analysis, and wetland monitoring reports.

Maria Gutierrez

Maria GutierrezBACK TO TOP

Office Manager

Maria is responsible for human resources, accounts payable and receivable, project scheduling and workload forecasting, budget tracking and reporting, financial projections, and other office/facilities management.  Maria has over 10 years of management experience and has supported all levels of governmental and non-profit agencies with program development, policy analysis, research, and facilitation. Prior to joining the firm in 2008, Maria received her master’s degree from The Evan’s School of Public Affairs at the University of Washington.

Nick Silverman

Nick SilvermanBACK TO TOP

P.E., Water Resources Engineer

Nick’s background focuses on the design and construction of natural system restoration. He has expertise in CAD, GIS, hydraulic analysis and modeling, project management, collecting and interpreting field data, and developing design packages. He has supervised both hand and machine construction on stream projects throughout Puget Sound. His love and appreciation for the rivers and streams of the Northwest comes from his lifetime devotion to whitewater paddling and the ultimate hydraulic analysis it provides. He is currently a PhD student in the Geosciences Department at The University of Montana. He remains on staff as a consultant for stream and wetland design engineering.

Alicia Hrachovec
